Is it Safe to Have Dental Work Done in Mexico?

Updated: Jul 10

If you're considering getting dental work done in Mexico, you're not alone! Many people from the United States and Canada travel to Mexico each year for affordable dental care.

But the question remains, is it safe? In this article, we'll discuss compelling reasons why you should get your dental work done in Mexico and how you can access top-quality care at a fraction of the cost.

Accredited by Prestigious Organizations

One of the critical factors that contribute to the safety and quality of dental work in Mexico is the accreditation of dental clinics and dentists by prestigious organizations. Many Mexican dental facilities are accredited by reputable groups such as DNV GL International Accreditation for Hospitals, which ensures that they meet strict standards for patient safety, quality of care, and infection control.

Moreover, some Mexican dentists are members or accredited members of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), one of the highest and most respected organizations in the field of dentistry. Dentists who are part of the AACD have proven to be at the top of their field, dedicated to providing the best possible care to their patients. These dentists invest thousands of dollars in continuing education courses, demonstrating their commitment to improving their skills and staying up-to-date with the latest techniques and technologies.

Low-Cost but Quality Dental Services

One of the primary reasons people choose to get dental work done in Mexico is the significant cost savings. Dental procedures in Mexico can cost up to 70% less than in the United States or Canada, without compromising quality.

For example, a dental implant that might cost $4,000 or more in the U.S. can be obtained for as little as $1,200 in Mexico. Similarly, a full mouth reconstruction that could easily exceed $40,000 in the U.S. may cost only $12,000 to $15,000 in Mexico.

Many Americans find it difficult to afford dental care in the U.S. due to the high costs and limited insurance coverage for certain procedures. Even with dental insurance, patients may still face substantial out-of-pocket expenses, making it challenging to access the necessary dental care they need.

However, in Mexico, the lower cost of living and operational expenses for dental clinics translates into substantial savings for patients, without sacrificing quality. Many Mexican dental clinics use state-of-the-art equipment and materials, and their dentists are highly trained and experienced.

A Variety of Cutting-Edge Dental Treatments and Facilities Available

Mexican dental clinics offer a wide range of dental treatments, from routine cleanings and fillings to more complex procedures like dental implants, root canals, and cosmetic dentistry.

Many clinics have modern facilities equipped with the latest dental technology imported from the US, Europe, and Asia, ensuring that patients receive top-notch care on par with what you would expect in the United States or Canada.

U.S. Citizens in Mexico are Safer than U.S. Citizens in their Home Country

While the idea of traveling to Mexico for dental work may raise safety concerns for some, the data suggests that U.S. citizens are generally safer in Mexico than in their home country.

According to publicly available data from the U.S. State Department, out of the 2,865 homicides of U.S. citizens abroad recorded in their database, 1,328 (46.4%) occurred in Mexico.

However, it's important to consider that Mexico is the largest destination for U.S. citizens, with an estimated 1.6 million U.S. citizens living in the country and approximately 30 million more visiting each year. When taking into account the large number of U.S. citizens in Mexico, the homicide rate for U.S. citizens in Mexico is estimated to be around 3.0 per 100,000, which is lower than the homicide rate in the United States (6.5 per 100,000 according to UNODC data).

Furthermore, the data from the U.S. State Department indicates that the homicide rate of U.S. citizens in Mexico is not increasing and has actually been trending down from a peak in 2010/2011. Partial data for 2022 (through June) shows only 25 homicides of U.S. citizens in Mexico for the first half of the year.

Many Mexican Dentists Speak Excellent English

Communication is crucial when it comes to dental care, and many Mexican dentists speak excellent English. This ensures that you can clearly understand the procedures being performed, ask questions, and express any concerns you may have.

Moreover, many dental clinics in popular tourist destinations like Rocky Point, Los Algodones, Tijuana, and Cancun cater specifically to English-speaking patients from the United States and Canada.
